オンタリオ部会主催　講演会

　オンタリオ部会では8月6日（金）トロント補習授業校の矢木信男校長をお迎えし、「海外における国語教育の変遷とこれから～ロンドン、カラカス、高雄、そしてトロント～」と題した講演会を国際交流基金トロント日本文化センターにおいて開催しました。補習授業校に通う児童生徒のご父兄、教育に携わっている方など、約40名に足を運んでいただきました。

　会の前半はトロント補習授業校の現状と課題ついてお話いただきましたが、児童生徒と保護者、教師へのアンケート結果と、そこで浮き彫りになった問題解決へ向けての、校内研修体制づくりなど具体的な取り組みをご紹介いただきました。後半はトロント日本商工会の専務理事でCAJLEの理事でもある伊東義員氏との対談形式で、過去20年にわたるイギリス、ベネズエラ、台湾の日本人学校でのご経験をユニークなエピソードを交えてお話いただきました。全体を通して矢木校長の教育に対する真摯な姿勢と情熱が伝わってくる講演で、気がつけば終了の時間を迎えていました。

　オンタリオ部会の次のイベントは9月10日（金）の「日本語教育を継続させる：高校から大学・カレッジへ」の第3回です。詳細は追ってウェブサイトに掲載予定です。

オンタリオ部会集会報告

　6月11日（金）、国際交流基金トロントに於いて、「日本語学習を継続させる：高校から大学・カレッジへ」と題する第2回目の集会を開催しました。現職教師だけでなく、個人で日本語を教えられている方、これから日本語を教えようとしている方など、様々な視点と興味をもたれている方々総勢30名が出席されました。

　今回は昨年12月の第１回集会で提示した「オンタリオ州のおける外国語としての日本語教育講座の種類（概観）」の中から、特に高校から大学への連携について焦点を当て、実際のコース内容を高校より１つ、大学より２つ紹介いただきました。詳細なコース紹介であったことから、質疑も具体的なものとなりました。普段目にすることのない他の教育機関のコース内容を知ることで、縦（高校～大学）横（高校間、大学間）の連携強化の一助になったものと思います。

　今回で２回目の集会ではありますが、こうした取り組みが有益であるとの声を多数頂いておりますことから、今後もこうした形での集会を定期的に開催する予定です。

トロント日本語教育レクチャー・ワークショップ（報告）

　8月29日（土）、トロントの国際交流基金において日本語教育レクチャー・ワークショップが開催されました。出席者は46名、現職の教師から、まだ教壇には立ったことのない方まで、幅広い層の方に来ていただくことができ、当初予定していた通りの集まりとなりました。今回は、レクチャー・ワークショップを通して何かを学ぶだけでなく、地元トロントで日本語教育に関わっている方、また関わりたいと思っておられる方々のニーズを知るというのが大きな目的でもあり、様々な声を聞くことができたのは、共催であったCAJLEにとって大きな収穫だったと言えます。

　レクチャー・ワークショップは、今回交流基金がアレンジしてくださった根津誠先生（国際交流基金日本語国際センター専任講師）のもと、具体的でわかりやすい内容に参加者からは高い評価を受けました。参加者同士のグループワークが中心となったワークショップの部分は、議論にも熱が入り、積極的に活動されている様子が見て取れました。他人の意見やアイデアを聞くことで、自分の引き出しが増えたという感想を述べておられる方もいます。

　今後CAJLEや国際交流基金がワークショップや勉強会などを企画するとした場合、どのような形式や内容のものを望まれているかという問いに対しては、大がかりなものでなくてかまわないので、１～２カ月に一度の頻度で定期的にワークショップなどの開催を検討してほしいという意見が少なからず得られました。現在活動休止中のオンタリオ部会と開発企画との協力体制の下、可能であれば国際交流基金との共催も視野に入れながら、現場の先生たちのニーズに応えることができるような活動を企画していきたいと思った次第です。

      On Friday, August 6, the Ontario Chapter invited Mr. Nobuo Yagi, the Principal of the Japanese　School　of　Toronto　Shokokai　Inc．for a talk entitled “Transitions in and Prospects for Japanese National Language Education Overseas—London, Caracas, and Guaoxin.” The talk was held at the Japan Foundation, Toronto. We had about 40 attendees including parents whose children attend the school, those who are engaged in education, and the like.

      The talk consisted of two sections. The first half was a lecture introducing the school’s current situation and issues it has confronted. Mr. Yagi spoke about surveys among of students, parents, and teachers and how those were employed to improve the school’s teacher training system to strengthen their program. The second half adopted a “talk show style,” between Mr. Yagi and Mr. Yoshikazu Ito, Secretary General of the Toronto Japanese Association of Commerce and Industry and a board member of CAJLE. During the interview, Mr. Yagi talked about his unique experiences from time spent at Japanese schools in England, Venezuela, and Taiwan over the past 20 years. We were impressed by his sincere attitude and passion towards education and were so captivated by this discussion to realize we had run out of time.

      Our next event is Continuing Learning Japanese: From Secondary to Post Secondary Schools 3, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 10. Further information will be posted on this website.

The Ontario Chapter Meeting Report

On Friday, June 11^th , Ontario Chapter Meeting “Continuing Learning Japanese: from Secondary to Post Secondary School 2” was held at the Japan Foundation in Toronto with total 30 participants, including current teachers, private Japanese tutors and people who has interest in Japanese Education.

On this session, “the continuation from High School/Secondary school to Post-Secondary” was focused based on the structural map of Japanese Language Education in Ontario which was presented at previous meeting in December 2009. Total three detailed presentations, including one from High School and two from University were successfully leading concrete questions from attendee. This meeting was rare opportunity to learn the course details at other institutions and contributed to understand the cross-relation between secondary and post-secondary as well as among secondary/ post secondary institutions.

 Based on positive feedback after two meetings, we will plan this meeting regularly.

Lecture & Workshop on Japanese Education (Toronto)

 There was a lecture/workshop on Japanese Education at the Japan Foundation in Toronto on Saturday, August 29, 2009, which was co-hosted by the Japan Foundation in Toronto, CAJLE and NJCA. The total number of attendees was forty six and not only current teachers but also those who are interested in teaching Japanese gathered and had a fruitful afternoon. One of CAJLE’s main purpose of co-hosting this event was to learn the needs from those who are engaged in teaching Japanese in Toronto and we were able to collect data from “real voices” of the attendees.

The lecture/workshop was delivered and arranged by Mr. Makoto Netsu (Lecturer, the Japan Foundation Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa), whose presentation was very well received. He divided the attendees into small groups and encouraged them to discuss actively.

It was a great opportunity for all of us to share our thoughts and challenges together at the local level. Quite a few people say that they would like to have a workshop arranged every other month, especially something not too formal so that they feel more relaxed to participate. In response to their needs, the CAJLE would like to continue organizing events possibly with the Japan Foundation in the future. This will be mainly discussed in the Ontario Chapter.
